Click Here This document was written on 4/23/45 in Bialystok Poland. It pertains to the sale of the religious property of the Bilsk Street Beit Ha Midrash (prayer house) in Zabludow Poland. The Rabbi's house was located nearby, and may have also been included in the sale. These where among the few properties that survived the initial burning of the town by the Germans in June of 1941. The document has the seal of the Jewish Council of Bialystok. The authorized person for signing the document was Turek Mendel of the Jewish Council of Bialystok, on the conditions of the deed of sale of the 26th of March, 1945. The sale was for the price of 130,00 Zloty.
The document is signed by Simon Datner. Before the war he was a beloved teacher at the Hebrew Gymnasium in Bialystok where several students from Zabludow attended his classes including Mina Bar-On Gelerstein, now living in Israel. During the war Datner fought with the Partisans in the forrest, and was one of a few from Bialsytok who survived. After the war he became Director of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, and was active in the Polish commission to investigate Nazi war crimes. In 1968 he was dismissed due to his refusal to sign or make statements that were anti-Israel, and critical of international Jewish organizations. He was later rehabilitated. I believe he died in the early 1980's. Today his daughter Helena Datner Spiewak is also a well known Jewish Historian and Sociologist in Warsaw. She is currently head of the Jewish Pedigogical Institute in Warsaw.
