1) Cooking in the home of an
elderly Zabludowan.
2) In this area stood the Mikvah
(ritual bath). Right next to it a bit down the road stood the
very old Zabludow Synagogue.
A few years ago they were doing some digging here and came across
a large concrete foundation which was removed. Apparently it
was the foundation of the Mikvah. The cheder (religous school)
was also in this general area.
3) This was dinner at the home
of a retired physician in Bialystok. He is very interested in
the subject of Jewish legacy in the area. He and his wife traveled
to Israel a few years ago, and his daughter studies Jewish history
and culture at University. They were wonderful hospitable people.
His wife straight out apologized to me for the horrible attitude
of many Poles towards Jews, and she said she was very embarrassed
by it.
4) This is the main building
of a very nice looking Inn located West of Zabludow just outside
of Tikocin. It is owned by a young couple from Bialystok.
5) This is Lipowa Street the
main street in Bialystok.
6) This is the list of 300 Jewish
taxpayers in Zabludow in 1849. We located it in the Bialystok
Civil Archive.
7) This is at the home of my
friend Mieczyslaw Szylkiewicz's daughter in Warsaw. From left
to right; me, his wife, grand daughter, Mieczyslaw, and another
grand daughter. Mieczyslaw's family owned a grocery in Zabludow,
and they lived on the same street as my great grandparents. Mieczyslaw
was arrested by the Soviets in 1939. He spent three years in
a labor camp in the arctic circle. He was there with Hirsh Mirsky
who was the son of the last Zabludow Rabbi. He had also been
arrested. Mieczyslaw fought with a Polish unit under the British
Army in North Africa and Italy, which is most well known for
it's breakthrough at Monti Casino. At least two Jewish men from
Zabludow also fought with this unit.
8) This is Mieczyslaw, and on
the left my friend Mariusz, and on the fight the retired Doctor
from Zabludow. This photo was taken at his country home in Narev.
9) This is the ruins of a Soviet
Bunker near the Bug River which was the dividing line between
German and Russian occupied Poland. This is near where Mieczyslaw
was arrested.
10) This is the beautifully restored
synagogue at Tikocin which is now a very interesting museum.
Tikocin was where Jews first settled in the Bialystok area.
